Stitching Heroes Needed: Swindon Big Knit Calls for Sewing Volunteers as Blanket Project Triples in Size

Swindon Big Knit — the community crafting initiative supporting homeless and vulnerable people across the town — is putting out an urgent call for volunteer sewers to help assemble knitted squares into warm, comforting blankets.

The group, which operates entirely through grants and community support, has produced hundreds of handmade blankets over the past seven years. Last Christmas alone, volunteers created 50 single‑sized blankets for the annual Blankets of Hope project. Each blanket was bundled with hats and biscuits and gifted to people in need across Swindon.

This year, the team has set its most ambitious goal yet: 150 blankets.

Thanks to growing meet‑ups at Haydon Wick Parish Council and Moredon Sporting Hub, more than 40 knitters and crocheters are now producing squares at an incredible pace and the group is well on track in terms of square production. But there’s one challenge.

Only two volunteers currently sew the squares together.

“With so many wonderful people knitting and crocheting for us, we’re now at the point where we urgently need more hands to help with the sewing,” says Tracey Major, who runs Swindon Big Knit. “You don’t need to be an expert; just someone who enjoys stitching pieces together and wants to make a real difference. Every blanket we finish brings warmth, comfort, and hope to someone who truly needs it.” Swindon Big Knit is inviting anyone who can sew by hand; to join their friendly crafting sessions or to take squares home to assemble at their own pace. Meet‑up dates and venues can be found here. Those interested in helping can also contact Tracey directly her email address is at the bottom of the Home page.

“Being part of this project is incredibly rewarding,” Tracey adds. “You’re not just sewing squares; you’re stitching together kindness, community and care.”
